Kalmar län opens booking for free flu and covid jabs from 2 November

Vaccination against influenza and covid-19 begins in Kalmar län on 2 November, and residents in the groups the region recommends can already book a time. Region Kalmar län announced the arrangements on 19 October, according to Oskarshamns-Nytt, and the offer covers the whole county, including Oskarshamn, Mönsterås and Högsby.

The jabs are free of charge for people in the recommended groups, with the cost met through taxation. Those who fall outside those groups are asked to wait until the priority groups have had their chance, and the region says anyone who still wants protection afterwards must pay for it themselves.

Why it matters

Influenza and covid-19 can cause serious illness, and vaccination lowers the risk of becoming severely ill or dying from either infection. The region notes that the vaccines do not prevent infection altogether — it is still possible to contract flu or covid-19 after being immunised.

The autumn campaign also concentrates limited appointment capacity where it is judged to do the most good. By opening booking before the 2 November start, the region gives older residents and others at higher risk time to arrange a slot rather than competing for one once the programme is under way.

Who is recommended the vaccines

For influenza, the recommendation covers people aged 65 and over, including those who turn 65 at some point during the year. Pregnant people from week 12 of pregnancy are also included, as are children from six months of age who belong to a medical risk group.

For covid-19, the general age threshold is 75. People younger than that may still be recommended a dose because of illness or because they need daily care, among other reasons. Where a person has a severe underlying condition, an individual assessment by a doctor may be required before a covid-19 vaccination; the region advises asking a health centre when it is unclear which recommendation applies.

Residents who have recently had a confirmed covid-19 infection may be given specific advice about this autumn's dose and should check with their vaccination clinic if that applies to them.

How to book and what to expect

Booking is handled through the 1177 service for Kalmar län, which provides separate routes for people recommended both vaccines and for those recommended only the influenza vaccine. Anyone who needs help making an appointment can telephone their health centre. Some clinics offer drop-in instead of booked times.

According to the region, it is usually possible to receive the influenza and covid-19 vaccines on the same occasion.

The first appointments are set for 2 November, with the county's health centres handling local arrangements. Residents unsure of their eligibility should contact their own clinic before booking.
